Your baby will have an eye ointment administered in the labor room shortly after birth. The ointment contains an antibiotic called Erythromycin.
It is given in order to treat an undiagnosed Gonorrhea or Chlamydia infection that could cause blindness if untreated.
The ointment does not irritate the baby’s eyes, but it does make his or her vision a bit blurry for a short time.
You can often ask the nurse to postpone the ointment until you have had a chance to bond with the baby. Do include that in your birth plan if you like.
