Myomas (also known as fibroids) are benign round growths in the uterus. More than 50% of women have them.
They are more common in women of Asian and of African descent and usually double in size during the first trimester and then stop growing.
At times they can grow so fast that they outgrow their blood supply. This lack of nutrition will cause the fibroid to degenerate and can result in severe pain and uterine cramps.
If severe, the cramps can cause preterm labor. If you have myomas, discuss this with your health care provider.
