Many pregnant women need to frequently perform heavy lifting. There are no clear-cut limits, however,
some recommendations have been derived from the American Medical Association and other organizations and are as follows:
- Starting at 20 weeks until the end of the pregnancy – lift no more than 51 lbs (23 kg)
- Near your delivery, you should be even more careful – itermittent lifting of no more than 31 lbs (14 kg) and repetitive lifting of no more than 21 lbs or (11 kg) is recommended
Listening to your body is wise. As long as you feel comfortable and don’t have any significant pelvic pain or pressure while lifting, you are probably fine.
If you are at risk for an incompetent cervix or preterm labor, you should be careful. Talk to your health care provider to find out how much is safe for you to lift.
