During your second trimester(weeks 13-26) ultrasound, you may be told there is a small white spot in your baby’s heart. It is called an Echogenic intracardiac focus of the heart or EIF.
The spot seen is due to a small deposit of calcium. This EIF is not felt to be harmful to your baby at all and will not affect its heart. About 5 to 15% of all women will have this seen in their baby and it is particularly common in Asian fetuses.
Be assured that as long as there is nothing else found during the ultrasound, the presence of an EIF has no significance to your baby and no follow up is needed.
